There is heavy shooting and fighting at the Edo state House of Assembly over move to remove the speaker, Hon Kabiru Adjoto. There are reports that several thugs have invaded the assembly and chased some lawmakers away.
The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr Victor Edoror, has been reportedly impeached. Edoror was replaced with a former Speaker, Mr. Justin Okonobor. The development led to a pandemonium in the Assembly Complex as security operatives shot in the air to disperse angry supporters of the embattled member who allegedly attempted to stop the impeachment.
It was gathered that two lawmakers of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), M.D Igbas and Hon Iluobe were fleeing with their security personnel.Three persons were said to have been injured in the fracas.
Meanwhile, we had previously reported that Kabiru Adjoto, the speaker of the Edo state Assembly and other lawmakers have filed a legal suit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the outcome of the party’s primaries.
The aggrieved lawmakers accused the party of stealing their mandates during the recently concluded polls. The speaker, who represents Akoko Edo constituency (1) in the state assembly, filed the action at the Federal High Court Aduwawa, Benin City on Thursday, October 18.
He had contested in the APC primary for Akoko Edo federal constituency, but the incumbent lawmaker, Peter Akpatason, was declared the winner in the exercise. Adjoto said the suit to was to correct the injustice allegedly done to them by some powers within the party.
Meanwhile, Etsako West candidate for Edo State House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dada Abubakar, has said that Auchi would not succumb to blackmail by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He declared this in Auchi while addressing his supporters over his re-affirmation as the PDP candidate.
According to Abubakar, who contested against the incumbent in the 2015 House of Assembly elections, “it is ridiculous that instead of the candidate exhibiting his achievements in office, he is rather blackmailing Auchi whose support gave him the legislative seat.”
Abubakar, who boasted of Auchi’s 43,000 registered voters, said the constituency would not have rotated the legislative seat among the four wards, but in the spirit of fairness and justice, opted to support zoning with the three wards whose combined voting strength is within 23,000.
“Auchi community willingly supported Agbede Community, which constitutes a ward in the constituency, to occupy the House of Assembly elections for eight years.
